I'm not sure where the Pirates got Mike Zagurski from, but he's 10 pounds heavier than I am(6-0/240???, and is seemingly incapable of recording an out.  But he IS left handed, which means he gets to pitch in the majors, even though he's awful. 

Bowden Cave

I have fond memories of exploring Bowden Cave back in the 80's when I lived in Elkins, WV, but I'd never enter a wild cave as ill equipped as this group is. 

Riding the Rails

We had to cut our vacation short due to the situation with Mr. Tawney, but on Tuesday, we enjoyed a ride on the Cass Senic Railway in West Virginia.  Great trip with a coal fired, steam powered Shay locomotive!

Bachmann Won't Seek Reelection

Well, the big political news today is that wingnut teabagging congresscritter Michelle Bachmann will not be seeking reelection.  Gee, I wonder why?

Marketing Genius

I just got a phone call from what appears to be the marketing arm for the emergency hospital we took Mr. Tawney to.  After introducing himself, the rep asked how our cat was doing? 

Me: "He's dead." 

Him: "Oh good, so he's doing well?"

"No he's dead."

"He's dead?"

" Yes he's dead.  Don't you people even read the case files before you make a call?  God you're insensitive."

Goodbye Mr. Tawney

The kennel called last night and told us Mr. Tawney was acting strange and wasn't eating.  At our request, the owner took him to the emergency vet and we cut short our vacation to find out what was wrong, but it didn't sound good.

The vet isn't sure what happened, but he was suffering from blood sodium levels so high they topped the charts, it made him lethargic, confused, severely dehydrated, and would have ultimately lead to fatal swelling of the brain.  It could have been a tumor, or kidney disease, or a stroke, but it would have cost thousands of dollars to pin down the cause, with no change in a very poor prognosis.  Rather than see him suffer, we made the difficult decision to say farewell to our Big Boy.  He was about 12 years old.

For nearly 30 years, I've always shared my home with at least one cat, and at one point as many as four.  Now there are none.

Vacation

Vacationing in Virginia this week.  Light posting likely.  I'll be back at my computer on June 1.

Eating Their Own

Hilarious!  And right in my very county council district!

Allegheny County Councilman Matt Drozd says he's abandoning the Republican  Party and running as an independent write-in candidate after losing the primary  election.

Speaking from the courthouse courtyard, Mr. Drozd said he was targeted by a  deceptive mailer from opponent Tom Baker that insinuated he voted for President  Barack Obama's health care overhaul, popularly known as "Obamacare."

If local Republicans are so stupid to believe that a local county council votes on federal legislation, then they're going to get the kind of candidates they deserve.  Meanwhile, if Drozd can run as an independent, he'll likely split the Republican vote, throwing the race to the Democratic candidate. 

I know in the city of Pittsburgh, if you run in a party primary, you cannot run in the general as an idenpendent, but I have no idea if that applies to the county as well.
