They Just Don't Get It

Religious people are weird.

Members of a grassroots group in Connellsville installed the first of 14 Ten Commandments monuments in front of a local club on Saturday.

The Thou Shalt Not Move group was formed after the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation sued to remove a Ten Commandments monument at Connellsville Junior High School.

The group sold yard signs to raise money for the new granite monuments.

The first monument will be placed outside the Fraternal Order of Eagles on South Arch Street.

They can place these things all they want on private property.   The issue is when they're placed on PUBLIC property.  They can erect thousands of these on private property, and no one would care.  Keep them off public property.  Get it?

Oh, and how many hungry could you feed, and how many poor could you clothe, how many sick could you heal, with the money you spend on this project?  Read your Bible much?

Absurdly Busy

Its been a very busy week politically, but unfortunatly, real life is intruding in that manner that it often does, so I've been unable to post much.  So on that note:

Supreme Court decision on VRA?  BAD (but wondering if it will backfire on them)

DOMA unconstitutional?  GOOD!

Prop 8 effectivly repealed?  GOOD!

Preparing for the National Park Service event in Gettysburg, there's gear to clean and pack, hardtack to bake, and by some bizarre happening, I'm in charge of medical, so there's first aid stuff to gather and pack as well.

A Much Different Place? Not So Much

Well, that didn't take long.

Just two hours after the Supreme Court reasoned that discrimination is not rampant enough in Southern states to warrant restrictions under the Voting Rights Act, Texas is already advancing a voter ID law and a redistricting map blocked last year for discriminating against black and Latino residents.

Post-racial my ass. 

 

Why Libertarianism Doesn't Work

Lets say I live in a neighborhood (for the record, I do)  and lets say I decide that I want to work 16 hours a day to accumulate as much wealth as possible.  This is of course, entirely consistent with an Objectivist viewpoint.  As a result of my dedication to my job, my lawn suffers. 

My neighbor is trying to sell his house.  He is of course, wanting to get as much money as possible for the sale of his house.  However, my shaggy lawn is depressing the value of his property. 

SO who wins?  My right to spend as much time as possible to aquire as much wealth as possible?  Or his right to make as much money via the sale of his property as possible? 

The two outcomes are mutually exclusive.  If he prevails, my rights are trampled.  If I prevail, his rights are trampled.

Note that this is not the fault of Chesney, or even of the majority of his fans.  I've seen this same pig-ignorant treatment of the enviroment at many large events.  Its just that some people are totally self centered.  I blame Ayn Rand.

Lets Go Bucs!

At .600, the Pirates have the second best winning percentage in Major League Baseball, and are just two games behind the league leading Cardinals, who stand at .627.  I dislike West Coast games, because I cannot stay up late enough to watch them, and I hate interleague play with the intesity of a thousand suns, but here's looking towards a sweep of the Angels today!
