Tragic.
A 6-day-old infant is in intensive care following surgery after he was shot in the head by a stray bullet fired by a hunter Thursday evening in Indiana County.
District Attorney Pat Dougherty said it was believed the bullet only grazed the boy, but it actually went through the baby's head.
The infant was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Mr. Dougherty said doctors have reported there would not likely be a condition update until Saturday.
While I don't hunt, I have no problem with hunting, and I enjoy game killed by my friends that do hunt. What strikes me is the Commonwealth's 150 yard safety zone from roads and occupied structures, One hundered and fifty yards is probably sufficent for shotguns, but rifles? Those things are lethal for miles.
I'm sure the individual responsibe feels terrible, but I've always been taught to A: Hit your target, and B: Make sure you have an adequate backstop.
I've had to put down injured deer, sick raccoons and maimed groundhogs as part of my job, but I've always made sure I had something beyond the animal that would safely contain the bullet if I missed or the round traveled through and out the other side of the critter.
