A Bit More Of The Mask Falls

Republicans just will not be happy until they kill off every single decent paying manufacturing job in this country.

Mr. McCain, as he has done in previous congressional sessions, is advocating for changes to the 95-year-old Merchant Marine Act. Section 27 of that law, known as The Jones Act, effectively requires that vessels operating on U.S. waterways be built, owned and primarily crewed by Americans, if those vessels are transporting goods between U.S. ports.

The Arizona Republican had proposed an amendment to the Senate’s version of the Keystone XL authorization bill that would have overturned the part of the act requiring ships to be built in the U.S. The amendment was later scuttled, and the Senate’s Keystone construction bill was approved Thursday by a 60-36 vote — but Mr. McCain could revive the debate via other legislative channels in the months ahead. 

Last week, in remarks to the Senate, Mr. McCain said the Jones Act is “an archaic [law] that hinders free trade, stifles the economy and hurts consumers — largely for the benefit of labor unions.”

Any working person who votes for these vultures is cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

Gun Insanity

I'm a gun owner.  I'm not a hunter, but I enjoy things like skeet and target shooting.  I feel no need to own a gun for personal defense, but then again, I live in an urban area with excellent police coverage.  If I lived in the sticks where the nearest police protection was an hour away, I'd probably keep a handgun.

That said, how could any person, and any organization be against a law requiring you to report to police a lost or stolen gun once you became aware that your firearm was missing???

Here's NRA gink Jonathan Goldstein in the Pee-Gee: “Our members live under the threat of being charged every day,” he said. “And the threat of being charged for exercising a lawful right is too much to take. Imagine if you had to report to the government every time you lost papers related to a political speech.” 

Please Mr. Goldstein, point me to an example where someone has been beaten to death with paper they lost.

UPDATE:  The Post-Gazette removed Mr. Goldstein's comment regarding lost papers from the story.  Probably because it makes Goldstein look like an idiot.

 

Amazingly Stupid

I know I'm late to the party on this, but Kirby Delauter just might be the dimmest politician on the face of the earth, managing to tun himself into an international internet joke.   Unlike many politicians, however, he managed to craft an actual apology.

“The first amendment is alive and well in Frederick County. As a public figure working to maintain and improve the county, it can be very frustrating to feel misrepresented or misinterpreted by a local media outlet.

“Over my career I have fired off my fair share of angry e-mails, which in hindsight I wish I hadn’t. I can’t think of one that had a positive effect. Usually, they only served to escalate the conflict. I thought I had long ago learned the lesson of waiting 24 hours before I hit the send key, but apparently I didn’t learn that lesson as well as I should have.

“Of course, as I am an elected official, the Frederick News-Post has the right to use my name in any article related to the running of the county — that comes with the job. So yes, my statement to the Frederick News-Post regarding the use of my name was wrong and inappropriate. I’m not afraid to admit when I’m wrong.

“I got elected to serve all the citizens of northern Frederick County, Democrats as well as Republicans. I look forward to the local papers covering my effort in that regard.”

Good for him for admitting that he was wrong!
