What A Week!

Ever since I got promoted, I've had less and less time to post on things that are going on or that interest me, but how can I let this week pass without commenting??

First, the big news of the day was the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, legalizes gay marriage throughout the land!  While wingnut tears are delicious, I'm looking forward to Rick Santorum feeling compelled to have sex with a dog light of today's decision! 

I've never understood some peoples' objection to gay marriage, as gay couples marrying simply has no effect whatsoever on my own marriage.  I'm happy that now everyone who wants to enter into a commited relationship can receive the legal advantages marriage conveys.

Yesterday's news had the Court upholding the ACA subsidies by a 6-3 margin.  I expected this to be 5-4 in favor of the government, with Roberts siding with the liberals, and was surprised that Kennedy joined in.  I always thought the lawsuit was without merit, essentially based on a typo, but what I find interesting is how the right can fight so hard demanding that a single phrase be interpreted literally, while completly ignoring half the text of the Second Amendment.

Finally, the Confederate battleflag is falling all over the south in the aftermath of the Charleston massacre.  I've long viewed the battleflag as a symbol of treason, and I agree wholeheartedly that it has no business flying over public buildings, especially when you consider why and when that particular piece of cloth started flying over statehouses in the Old Confederacy in the first place. That said, nothing is preventing private citizens from displaying it, even if it does become harder to find as retail outlets begin to stop carrying it.   

 

Learned Behavior

No child is born racist, racism is learned, and perhaps at a younger age than once thought.  I haven't seen too much published at this time about the shooting suspects upbringing, but living in the deep south, and in the state that exepmplifies sedition, where the symbols of racism are unavoidable, is it any surprise that Dylann Roof holds odious views?

This was an act of terrorism.  It was a hate crime.  It was not an attack on religion, despite the protestations of those on the right.  How many churches did the killer drive past on his way Emanuel A.M.E., a church steeped in history and symbolism?  If it was an attack on religion, why didn't the killer launch his attack on a Sunday, when the churches are full? 

And the most odious?  Blaming the victim, as an NRA board member did.

So where to start?  How do we begin to address the posion of racism?  Ta-Nehisi Coates made a modest suggestion.

Socialized Medicine For Me...

But not for thee!  "Mr. King said that he was not really worried about the outcome of the case, King v. Burwell, because as a Vietnam veteran, he has access to medical care through the Department of Veterans Affairs." 

As Mr. King is a veteran, I agree that his health care SHOULD be not only subsidized, but totally covered.  Its a shame he can't see beyond his own priveledge. He gets government provided health care, but how DARE anybody else get it!

Dear Rodale Press....

I think its time we started seeing other magazines....

I was already disappointed when Rodale changed Organic Gardening to Organic Life, as it is now no longer a gardening magazine, but the latest issue had a huge, credulous article on the quackery known as homeopathy, of all things!  I shant be renewing my subscription after that waste of ink.
