What happens to somebody's vanity newspaper hobby once all that wingnut inheritence cash is gone?

Trib Total Media president and CEO Jennifer Bertetto said in a statement that the sale is "part of a larger strategic growth plan" developed by the board of directors to address a year of changes that include the July 2014 death of Richard M. Scaife.

Ms. Bertetto said Mr. Scaife’s death “prompted the board to undertake a strategic review of the company and identify our best opportunity for growth in an ever-evolving media landscape.

If I recall correctly, the Tribune-Review has never made a dime in profit, and was only afloat thanks to that sweet, sweet Scaife money.  It also engaged in an interesting tactic to increase readership...buy up suburban dailies like the North Hills News Record and the Valley News Dispatch, and "convert" those papers into the Trib.

Looks like the Trib is now adjusting to post-wingnut welfare life.

The Nation We Live In

A world where a reporter and her camerman are killed by gunfire while interviewing someone live.

A news crew from WDBJ7 local news was on the scene at the Bridgewater Plaza near Smith Mountain Lake at about 6.45am ET to film a segment for the morning news when several shots rang out. Screams followed and the camera recording the feature fell, as producers cut to the shocked studio news team.

The station later announced that two of their team, Alison Parker, 24, and Adam Ward, 27, had been shot dead.

Of course, the answer must be MOAR GUNS because they obviously could have returned fire if they were armed, right?

Retirement? Its Looking Better Every Day!

I've got a year to go before I can even consider it, but after spending the day doing two of the three things I really love to do (gardening and cooking, just need to add canning to hit the trifecta), I'm not missing work at all, despite loving my job, and its only day three of 12 days off (I'm not counting weekends because I usually have them off anyway).  Will have to see how the numbers work when we get to this point next year.

Daddy-Daughter Day

Spent the bulk of the day with the Frothling.  First we drove out to Fox Chapel and I showed her around Shady Side Academy, where my father taught English for many years, and the place where I grew up and went to school. 

We then shared some lunch at Chev and Rachel's Family Diner before heading to the grocery store to pick up supplies for her impending sixth birthday party.

Now we're chilling, watching some cartoons while waiting for the Frothette's caseworker to stop by for a home visit and some updates on her case.

Not missing work one bit today.

Time Off!

Two and a half weeks of vacation!  Perhaps I can get this nearly dorment blog going again with some regular posting, now that I have some time!

Kane Has To Go

If you're not from Pennsylvania, its unlikely you know much about our embattled Attorney General Kathleen Kane.  In a nutshell, she's facing charges related to the leaking of grand jury testimony to a newspaper, and then lying about it.   Now the FBI is involved.  

Obviously, she is innocent until proven guilty, but I cannot see how she has any credibility as the Commonwealth's top prosecutor while facing these sorts of charges.  At the very least, she should take a leave of absence, assuming Pennsylvania's laws allow for such an action.

 

Slavery

And from the depths of right-wing talk radio, where the trial balloons of Republican policy are first lofted, we have this:

Iowa radio host and influential conservative kingmaker Jan Mickelson unveiled an immigration plan that would make undocumented immigrants who don't leave the country after an allotted time "property of the state," asking, "What's wrong with slavery?" when a caller criticized his plan.

Kinda puts the rhetoric from the Repbulican hopefuls about ending birthright citizenship in a certain context, doesn't it?
