So the P-G called, and asked if they could help with renewing my subscription. I told them I wasn't renewing. She asked if price was the problem, and I said, no, its the direction the paper's taken over the past two years. 1: The cowardly decision to not endorse someone for president. 2: The racist MLK day editorial. 3: The batshit insane endorsement of Rick Saccone over Conor Lamb. It wasn't that the paper endorsed Saccone, it was the rational; He's an experienced state rep (who hasn't accomplished anything of note in Harrisburg over a decade aside from getting the state sued on state/church separation issues) and that Lamb will vote to impeach Trump (a "fact" not in evidence). The last straw was firing Bob Rogers and replacing him with an unfunny hack who regularly produces misogynist cartoons. She protested, "I'm just a billing clerk, I can give you the comments line." I said, No, you're a representative of the paper who called and inquired about why I wasn't renewing and I told you why. I've also been contacting your advertisers, so they know why your circulation is dropping. Now you have something to tell your supervisor when he inquires about success rates in re-upping subscribers.

I've subscribed to that paper for 30 years.  No more.

So What Does It Mean???

Well, this is rather interesting. The report seems to suggest that Trump may have committed obstruction of justice, and may have conspired with the Russians, but the evidence isn't sufficient to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed. Where I come from, that means "innocence" from a criminal justice point of view. However, from a civil/political perspective? I think Trump is still in a world of hurt, not that his fawning acolytes will care.

What Is Wrong With This Picture?

I'm a gun owner.  I like target shooting, and I appreciate historic firearms.  I used to own pistols, but once my kids became ambulatory, I found the risk factor too much to bear, and sold my hand guns.  I still own long arms; my reproduction musket, my 1917 SMLE, and I just bought a 1898 Krag.  So what did it take for me to buy my new Krag?  I handed someone $300.00 and he handed me my new, military grade, bolt-action rifle.

I also recently retired from my job as a police officer.  To get out of the house for a few days a week, I took a job working in the cafeteria of my local high school.  To get this job, I had to be fingerprinted, pass an FBI background check, and pass a Pennsylvania State Police background check.  All to hand out chicken patties and French fries to kids.  I also volunteer with Girl Scouts and youth softball.  I'm an adoptive parent/foster parent.  To be those things, I also was subjected to fingerprinting and federal and state background checks. 

Something is seriously out of whack here.

 

 

Rosfeld Not Guilty

I've avoided commenting on this case, because I wanted to get all the facts before coming to a conclusion. While I found the initial reporting on this tragedy troubling, I was also interested on why the prosecution didn't call a use of force expert to testify, and why they didn't call the driver of the car to testify. I found Rosfeld's testimony compelling, especially his describing that he thought he saw an object in Rose's hand. The law states that you must view the facts of the case based on what a reasonable police officer would conclude, and forced to make a split-second decision based on the facts at hand. Did Rose deserve to die? No. But is Rosfeld guilty of premeditated murder? Also, no, and so says not me, but a jury of his peers.

This Is Not Normal

The equivalent  of a category 2 hurricane is lashing the Midwest, and this storm formed over dry land.  This is not normal.

Well, That Really Hurts

I was coming down the stairs and slipped/tripped on one of the kids' toys.  Thankfully, I only suffered a painful high ankle sprain, but falls can be very dangerous.  Mrs. Froth's father died after falling down a set of stairs.
