I didn't get a chance to post last night, but with the Pirates beating the Cubs, and the Cardinals beating Washington, the Pirates secured their first playoff berth since 1992.

There's a huge series this weekend between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati this weekend.

At .600, the Pirates have the second best winning percentage in Major League Baseball, and are just two games behind the league leading Cardinals, who stand at .627.  I dislike West Coast games, because I cannot stay up late enough to watch them, and I hate interleague play with the intesity of a thousand suns, but here's looking towards a sweep of the Angels today!

It seems that Charlie Pierce and I were at the same baseball game. 

You should always walk to this ballpark. Even if you live in the suburbs, and you drive to the games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, you should park downtown and walk to the ballpark. You should cross over one of the yellow iron bridges that span the Allegheny, one of the city’s three famous rivers. Myself? I prefer the Rachel Carson Bridge, because it gives you a longer walk along the breezy riverbank on the first hot weekend of the year. And then you come up a little rise, and you get tossed into a festival of sound and joy — and, yes, beer, of several dozen different types and flavors — along Federal Street.

Had I known it at the time, I'd have bought him a beer.

What About Glenn Burke?

NBA player Jason Collins comes out as gay.  That's a remarkable thing, and its great that a major sports athlete feels confident enough to proclaim his sexuality.  But I have a problem with the media describing him as the first major sports athlete to come out while active, because its simply isn't true. 

Everyone forgets about Glenn Burke.

Burke played Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland A's back in the '70's.  When he played, there was no doubt he was gay.  He was "out" to his teammates, who largely didn't care, and "out" to his employers, who gave him a hard time. 

The fact that the media swept Burke's sexuality under the table by ignoring it isn't Burke's fault.  Collins' announcement says more about the changing attitudes of media jock sniffers towards homosexuality than it does about the attitude of athletes.

On the Pirate's 2012 collapse was last night's no-hitter thrown against them by the Red's Homer Bailey.  Now, the best the Buccos can hope for is to finish at .500 by winning their final five games.  Its not going to happen.  The only good thing about is that I can cross witnessing a no hitter off my list (The hotdog, nachos and beer were also quite good).  The other shame of it was that A.J. Burnett also pitched very, very, well giving up only one run over eight innings pitched.

  I've now seen just about everything that can happen in a baseball game including rarities like the triple play (althought that one was on TV) and the steal of home.  All that remains is the perfect game, and last night came close to that.
