Is This About His Ego?

Frankly, I can not for the life of me figure out why Governor-Bought-And-Paid-For is suing the NCAA over the sanctions against Penn State.  The university agreed to the penalties, and while Corbett sat on the board of trustees, the Commonwealth itself doesn't run Penn State.  So why are the reasources of Pennsylvania going into a lawsuit to benefit what is essentially, an independent entity that itself accepted the sanctions, and plans to abide by them?

What possible legal standing does Corbett have in this case, if other than his overly inflated sense of importance?  How much tax money will be wasted in this appeal to the governor's ego?  Or is this just an attempt by an unpopular governor to pander to Penn State fans as he prepares to try for reelection?

Sandusky And The Sheriff

Jerry Sandusky received a sentence of 30 to 60 years in prison for his sexual predation.  Good riddance to bad rubbish.  However, what I really want to comment on is this picture taken by the Post-Gazette's Bob Donaldson.  Look at Centre County Sheriff Denny Nau on the left.  As an elected official, I suppose he cannot be blamed for wanting to be in the newspaper story of the biggest case Centre County's seen in the last 50 years.  However, look at that getup!  This is the sheriff of a central Pennsylvania County, a county that contains the main campus of one of the Northeast's largest universities, and he's dressed like Boss Hogg.  I have to wonder if he's also wearing hand-tooled cowboy boots. 

Someone should explain to Sheriff Nau that Pennsylvania is north of the Mason-Dixon line and east of the Ozarks.

 

Bad Publicity

So top Penn State officials were worried about bad publicity, so they decided to allow a monster to stay on the loose.  Hows that strategy working out for the university now?

"Four of the most powerful people at The Pennsylvania State University -- President Graham B. Spanier, Senior Vice President-Finance Gary C. Schultz, Athletic Director Timothy M. Curley and Head Football Coach Joseph V. Paterno -- failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade," according to the report. "These men concealed Sandusky's activities from the Board of Trustees, the University community and authorities. They exhibited a striking lack of empathy for Sandusky's victims by failing to inquire as to their safety and well-being, especially by not attempting to determine the identity of the child who Sandusky assaulted in the Lasch Building in 2001.

"Further, they exposed this child to additional harm by alerting Sandusky, who was the only one who knew the child's identity, of what (graduate assistant Mike) McQueary saw in the shower on the night of February, 9, 2001," according to the report.

Mr. Paterno also testified to the grand jury that he "ordinarily would have called people right away, [after hearing McQueary's report] but it was a Saturday morning and I didn't want to interfere with their weekends."

"Although concern to treat the child abuser humanely was expressly stated, no such sentiments were ever expressed by them for Sandusky's victims," Mr. Freeh said in his prepared remarks.

Unfreaking believable. They all belong behind bars.
